First Silent Movies!

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

Check out the first production of the DV1 class. Their requirement was to create a silent movie, that addressed the theme "lost". Our focus was really practicing composition of shots and story structure. What do you think about this first attempt?

  1. I saw "The Lost Phone" and I liked a lot the story, just it was a little confusing, why was he happy in one "dimension" and worried and always looking for his phone in the other? Is it two parts of a dream? If you explained that a bit more, this movie would be really good! Also, be careful, because now anyone on YouTube has Mathaus' number! Just keep this in mind for your next video! Keep up the good work!

  2. I watched all these movies ant thought they were all great! I think that for beginners in acting, shooting and editing they were pretty good. Some things that could be fixed in most of them would be the framing of some images, which sometimes would cause a distraction. All in all, I think that the in next next video, all of the movies will be a level higher, which will be awesome.

  3. The film I watched was ''The Lost Phone'' and I had some thoughts about how the movie was improved. For instance, the first time we watched it as a group, there was almost no sound track except for the part where there were the dream sound effects. After the improvements, I think that the music helped make the movie flow better and without it I think the film wasn't that great. Next, I think that the story line overall was interesting, although at some points I did not understand whether if something was a dream, or not. Lastly, as Camila has said, watch out putting phone numbers on screen since the public can view it!

  4. I watched "Friend Finding" and I really liked their silent movie and the story of it. For example, the beginning scene was very professional, the different angles you filmed it from, and the ending that was comedy. I also noticed that you improved your movie a bit by taking out an elevator scene which was useless and 2 close ups of her face when she looks around to prepare for the "chase." The only thing you could improve on is that your camera shakes a bit sometimes which would be better not to and also, when both of them meet, they shouldn't smile. What I mean is that they should look serious to make it more realistic. Anyways, Great job!
I re-watched my movie called "Lost memory" and I think that we met the expectations, but we could've done better. What I mean is that in some scenes we zoomed in when we weren't supposed to use zoom. Also, our camera shaked a bit so we could've told our camera man to be steady at the moment we filmed and we could've explained the sequence better to our public. What I mean is that some people got confused when they watched the movie so we could've explained or showed a scene where we showed the mother coming in to check on her son. Something that I did realize on the part where we zoom in the door of the nurse is that, I as a post-producer, actually could've shorten the clip till before we zoomed in because you can clearly see "NURSE OFFICE." Otherwise, I really liked the scene where Joey gets hit by the ball, the flash back idea, and the ending of the movie. Basically, apart from the errors we made, I liked our movie.

  5. I watched "Lost memory" and i liked the idea how you wanted to express your story but, i think you should explain more about it for the audience to understand your story(For example, the part when Joey was planning to get hit by the ball and the other one is when Camila appears as a mother). Also, i noticed you zoomed in and out while you were filming..The things that i liked about your movie was when Joey threw the basket ball to his head!!Great Job!

  6. I watched the "The locker Dillema" and i really liked a lot their story because it was very creative and easy to understand. But if they change some parts i think it would be better. For example, i think the sound effect didn't match in some scenes and also i think when the actor gets his materials and comes back to the class it was kind of confusing because it was the same classroom when they started so i think if they change the classroom it would be better. Great Job!

  7. I watched "Friend Finding" and i liked the beginning because it looked really professional and i liked when we speeded up and slowed down some scenes. But i think we had to change some parts like when Tea was looking for Clara it kind of looked she was planning something not looking for Clara and also we should change the scene when Clara went to fill in her water bottle, because we didn't know if she went to fill in her water bottle or if she when to do something else. Next time, our group should keep in mind the mistakes we made so that we don't make the same mistake again.

  8. I watched "The lost Phone" and i really liked when they positioned the camera at the bottom so that they could film Gabe and the sky. The only thing is that when Gabe woke up from his dream, i couldn't see his face, also we shouldn't be looking at Ms Kagohara's back, we should be looking at her face. I think these are the only things that they should improve. Great Job.

  9. I watched Friend Finding and also liked the beginning of how the camera was aimed at the foot which was very creative. Even though the movie was overall good, there were some parts which were kind of confusing like when Tea just runs through the hallway and is with different clothes. I also saw two girls which were talking and then they suddenly disappeared.

  10. I watched "The Lost iPhone". I half agree and half disagree with Camila because it was a little confusing but when I watched it again it seemed tome that Gabe was imagining when he didn't need a phone to have fun. Maybe next time try to have him wake up in the same place so that it gives that effect a little bit more, just so it could make sense. Again, my interpretation. I loved your shots, especially the one under the climbing thingy at the lower school playground. I think next time try to show Gabe and Ms. Kagohara's face in that shot. It would have looked a lot better. Also try to look up how to blur text in iMovie because now YouTube can call Mathaus. Otherwise, great job!:)
